Washington State Sexual Health Education Instructional Materials Review Instruments

In preparation for the 2018-2019 Sexual Health Education Curriculum Review, done regularly in coordination with the Dept. of Health, OSPI updated its review instruments. The revised instruments are designed to test more closely the alignment of instructional materials with WA State requirements (e.g. Healthy Youth Act, AIDS Omnibus Act, and Discrimination/Bias in Instructional Materials). Many of these revised instruments were based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Curriculum Analysis Tool (see below), after consultation with district-level curriculum specialists.

Review tools will be updated in early 2021 to reflect new requirements described in SB 5395.

These review instruments must be used by districts planning to conduct their own sexual health education materials reviews rather than use OSPI-reviewed materials. Each district establishes and maintains their own instructional materials review and adoption policy and procedures, according to state law related to instructional materials.
