The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Module segments on the OSPI Learn Server will be unavailable from May 1 to May 21, while the courses are being updated. All current user data will be maintained during the update, so you will be able to log back in with your existing username and password without losing track of your current progress in the courses. Note: We will be stopping the use of the Public forum reflection questions as of May 1, 2021. The reflection questions will still available to be downloaded and used offline.

The Social and Emotional Learning in Washington State Schools: Building Foundations and Strategies module is designed to be a part of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction's (OSPI) professional learning constellation of topics. It can be used by Educational Service Districts (ESD) and LEAs for administering clock hours. Clock hours are not available to individuals who take the course on their own.

The SEL Module

Welcome to the SEL module from legislative advocate, State Representative Tana Senn.

Intended Audience

This module is designed for educators, administrators, school staff, others professionals and parents who interact with youth as a means to help them build and improve their understanding of social emotional skills.

Structure of the Module

This online module has been designed in six distinct learning segments.

  • Learning Segment 1: Introduction to SEL
  • Learning Segment 2: Embedding SEL Schoolwide
  • Learning Segment 3: Creating a Professional Culture Based on SEL
  • Learning Segment 4: Integrating SEL into Culturally Responsive Classrooms
  • Learning Segment 5: Trauma Informed Social Emotional Learning
  • Learning Segment 6: Identifying and Selecting Evidence-Based Programs

Although the online module can be completed by an individual, the learning is significantly more impactful if it is done collectively by those who will be implementing SEL. Throughout the online module, suggestions on ways in which to engage in the learning in a group setting are provided.

Completing the Module

Each learning segment is meant to be self-directed or facilitated within a group setting. As such, we have included a wealth of information that allows you as the learner or facilitator to guide the experience. You are encouraged to start and stop at the points that are most relevant to you or the group and work within a time frame that fits your schedule. You can save your work and return to the learning segment at another time. We estimate that the total time to complete the basic module, not including all the additional resources, is approximately ten hours.

Accessing the Module

This course is created in the Moodle platform. Although it is free of charge, you must still register for a Moodle account. Moodle is compatible with any standards-compliant web browser. For the best experience and optimum security, we recommend that you keep your browser up to date.
