WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework

Overview of the ELPA21 to WIDA Transition Article

Dr. Kristin Percy Calaff's WIDA article and WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards authors, WAESOL Educator, 46(1), Winter 2021.

Washington State has adopted the WIDA English Language Development Standards and will transition into using the new standards and related assessments in the 2021–22 school year. WIDA is a 40-state consortium that promotes educational equity for multilingual learners through language development standards, assessments, and high-quality professional learning for P-12 educators.

An asynchronous version of the Introduction to WIDA ELD Standards Workshop will be available soon!

WIDA Transition Details

The WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework and WIDA screeners will be used beginning in August 2021. See details below about screening policy updates, accessing screener trainings, and WIDA professional learning and assessments.

The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten will be used for all possibly eligible English learners entering kindergarten in 2021–22. The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten is designed to be developmentally sensitive and is given no earlier than 30–60 days before the first day of school. Watch the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten introductory video to learn more about the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten. Given the developmental sensitivity of the screener, Washington State will no longer permit screening of entering kindergarten students before July 1st.

  • WIDA Screener for Kindergarten (paper-pencil assessment) will be used to screen all possibly eligible, 2021–22 kindergarteners.
  • Screening will begin in August 2021 rather than May 1st as was permitted in previous years. The WIDA Screener for Kindergarten is developmentally sensitive and is designed to be given no earlier than 30–60 days before the first day of school. Learn more about the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten.
  • Kindergarten Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities whose IEP Teams Recommend an Alternate Assessment: Will take the WIDA Screener for Kindergarten with accommodations.
  • June 2021–22 School Year: Asynchronous professional learning on the WIDA Screener for Kindergartenavailable in the WIDA Secure Portal.
  • WIDA Screener for Kindergarten Frequently Asked Questions

  • August 2021: All newly enrolled students and students returning to in-person instruction who are possibly eligible students in grades 1–12 will be screened with the WIDA Screener. The WIDA Screener will be online with a small supply of paper-pencil screeners to be used only with students who do not have basic computer literacy skills, e.g., never used/very limited exposure to computers or unfamiliar/unable to control a mouse or touchpad.
  • Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities whose IEP Teams Recommend an Alternate Assessment: Will take the WIDA Screener with accommodations.
  • May 2021–22 School Year: Asynchronous professional learning on the WIDA Screener.

All assessment materials, required trainings for the screeners and annual assessments, and asynchronous professional learning opportunities are in the WIDA Secure Portal. All K-12 educators can get an account to access the Secure Portal by:

  1. Email WIDA Help and ask to set up a WIDA Secure Portal account for assessments and eLearning. You must use your district email address.
  2. You will receive an email from WIDA Client Services Center informing you that an account has been set up.
  3. Go to: WIDA Login webpage.
  4. Select: WIDA Secure Portal
  5. Login to the WIDA Secure Portal with your district email address and password.

WIDA will launch their updated Secure Portal on September 1, 2021. Please note: Any of your in-progress trainings (not completed) by this date will be deleted.
