The pre-disaster mitigation project is a multi-year project funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This project will identify the risks from natural hazards to our students, teachers, and school facilities, and develop a hazard mitigation plan for Washington State K-12 facilities. The analyses and final plan will increase our understanding of the risks posed to K-12 facilities from nine natural disasters, and lay the foundation for increasing the safety of Washington's 1.1 million students.

Natural Hazards in Washington

The project is needed to gain a better understanding of the risks posed by the nine identified natural hazards in Washington state.

Planning Partners and Planning Team

OSPI is collaborating with a planning team of education stakeholders, as well as 25-35 school districts that have volunteered to play an active role in developing their own district specific mitigation plans.

Project Documentation

This project aims to provide an open and transparent process where the public can stay informed and give input on the statewide plan.
