Full and Limited certificates you may apply for if you are looking to gain or have already held a Career Tech Certification.

If you are looking to gain or have already held a Career and Technical Education Certificate.

Certificate Types

Initial - This is the first tier certificate that an educator can apply for if they have completed either the university route or the business and industry route program and hold the required experience.

Renewal of Initial - Select this if you have previously held or currently hold an Initial CTE Certificate.

Continuing - This is the second tier certificate that an educator can apply for once they have held an Initial CTE Certificate and have met the requirements to upgrade their certificate.

Renewal of Continuing - Select this if you have previously held or currently hold a Continuing CTE Certificate.

Conditional* - An educator can work with a state of Washington school district or skill center that wants to hire them for a position based upon their experience and expertise in a specific specialty area. This certificate must be initiated by a school district on the educator's behalf.

Initial/Continuing Career Guidance Specialist - Select this if you hold or have held a one, three or five year Career and Technical Educator certificate in Occupational Information Specialist or the one, three, or five year Career and Technical Educator Counselor certificate.

CTE Director - Select this to learn more about gaining or renewing the CTE Director Certificate.

* Limited certificate. If an educator is eligible to hold a full teaching certificate, then they would not qualify for any of the Limited certificates.

VCODE

Please Note: You will need to verify the experience for each VCODE requested.

To add a VCODE to an existing CTE Initial or CTE Continuing, please use this application. You will need to verify the experience for each VCODE requested.

EXPERIENCE NOTE: 

  • A total of three years (6,000 hours) of occupational experience needs to be verified in the past ten years in each VCODE requested. One year of occupational industry experience (2,000 hours) in the subject area other than teaching must be verified. If all or part of the 2,000 hours is more than ten years old, candidates must complete an additional 300 hours of recent (occurring in the last two years) occupational experience, which can be volunteer hours in the CTE subject area. Volunteer hours can only be used for the 300 hours of recent industry experience. Please download the Verification of Employment Form (4075V).

  • The applicant may use up to 4,000 hours of teaching experience in the CTE subject area and 2,000 hours of occupational experience (non-teaching) in the past ten years. Please download the Verification of Teaching Experience Form (4075H).

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE AND HEALTH SCIENCE BIOTECHNOLOGY HOURS NOTE: May use all 6,000 hours of teaching experience in biology. Please submit form 4075H. 

STEM HOURS NOTE: May use all 6,000 hours of teaching experience in science, technology, engineering, and math. Please submit form 4075H.
