National Board Certification and Your Washington State Teaching Certificate
National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs)
Achieving National Board Certification entitles you to maintain your Washington state teaching certificate for 5 years. However, it is necessary to complete the appropriate OSPI certification paperwork in order to maintain your teaching certificate.
If you are considering National Board Certification, please review the requirements for beginning the process in Become a NBCT Candidate.
Please contact our Certification Office with specific questions about your certificate.
A teacher or ESA Educational Staff Association (ESA) who earns certification from NBPTS may use the NBPTS certificate to convert the state residency certificate to a professional certificate. Teachers and ESAs need to maintain their state certificate (complete the appropriate paperwork). Application located on the right. Individuals who are NBPTS candidates and have been assessed for NBPTS certification can obtain a renewal valid for two years. Individuals need verification of assessment to obtain renewal. Assessment is submitted in Spring and verifications are not available until September. Since certificates expire on June 30, individuals should plan carefully so that renewal can be accomplished prior to their expiration date and not the September following the expiration date.
To maintain the validity of the continuing certificate:
- 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit (15 quarter hours or 10 semester hours) must be completed every five years.
- In lieu of the required clock hours, present a copy of a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
You must complete the appropriate paperwork to maintain your Washington state teaching certificate.
If you are a Candidate: To renew the Professional Certificate, 150 clock hours of approved continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit must be completed since the issuance of the most recent certificate. All continuing education credit hours shall relate to EITHER:
- one or more of the three standards outlined in WAC 181-78A-540
- one or more of the five salary criteria specified in RCW 28A.415.023
Some clock hours must be related to the standard, and some must relate to salary criteria.
Candidates for NBPTS who wish to use the clock hours offered by OSPI toward the clock hours required for renewal need to plan carefully.
Assessment is submitted in spring and verification is not available until September. Since certificates expire on June 30th, individuals should plan carefully so that earning clock hours can be accomplished prior to their expiration date and not the September following the expiration date.
If you are an NBCT: Professional Certificate renewal issued on the basis of holding a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificate will have a validity of five years or the validity of the NBPTS certificate, whichever is greater.
