What is Student 2 Student?
Student 2 Student (S2S) is a student-driven project to help entering high school students understand what they need to do to graduate and help them make the most of their high school years. S2S helps students make school relevant to their life outside the classroom and beyond graduation.

Why do we have a project?
About ten years ago, many people in Washington State, including business leaders, community members, members of the legislature, educators, families, and students decided to improve schools statewide. Part of that effort resulted in new high school graduation requirements, which the entering class of 2008 is the first class to face. Student 2 Student assumes students are resources in school and functions to meaningfully involve them in school change.

By participating in S2S, older students will

1) teach younger students about the new state and local graduation requirements,

2) encourage younger students to define success and determine their strengths to reach present and future goals, and

3) relate the requirements to life now and after high school, help them begin to set academic goals, and create personal plans. The primary goal throughout this project is to help students find more meaning and relevance in school.

Does Student 2 Student really work? Surveys of 12,000 8th and 9th grade participants tell us:

  • The Student 2 Student lesson increased students’ understanding of the four graduation requirements by 42 percent.
  • After the lesson, 20 percent more students had a plan for which classes to take in high school.
  • Both before and after the lesson, 80 percent of students believed that passing the WASL was an important academic goal.
