In 2006 the legislature (EHB 2910) required OSPI to conduct an environmental education study. HB 2910 specifies that the study is to be prepared in partnership with public and private entities invested in strategies to reach every student, family, and community with quality environmental education experiences.

The Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools resource document has been updated to help schools in their school improvement efforts. This second edition of the resource maintains the nine characteristics and definitions from the original 2003 document. It adds information from about 120 new research and professional references, as well as relevant OSPI documents, to help educators deepen their understanding of the characteristics, and it provides additional strategies for expanding implementation. The school improvement perception surveys, which also are on the OSPI website, can be used to gather information from staff, students, and communities to help gauge progress.

American high schools are increasingly the target of educational reform. Today's high schools are expected to graduate all students with the rigorous academic knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them for college or a career. The report "The High Schools We Need: Improving an American Institution" provides a comprehensive look at high school reform based on research and professional literature. It describes the characteristics of high schools we have and need and suggests strategies and models for improving them. Examples of schools and districts in Washington are highlighted.

Increased accountability measures under the 2001 federal education law known as No Child Left Behind are instilling a sense of urgency for reducing the number of students who drop out from school. As part Washington state’s efforts to keep students in school, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has released Helping Students Finish School: Why Students Drop Out and How to Help Them Graduate. This analysis examines the wide body of research and professional literature available to help answer some of the troubling questions about why students choose to leave school before earning a diploma.

Characteristics of Improving School Districts: Themes from Research, a report written by the Research and Evaluation Office, will assist school districts in their efforts to improve student learning and to make Adequate Yearly Progress under the current No Child Left Behind Act. A review of more than 80 research reports and articles revealed thirteen themes found in districts that are making substantial progress on various student indicators. This report defines and explains the themes and presents ideas that district leaders may consider when developing district improvement plans.
