Middle Level Strategies for
School Improvement
The purpose of this study was to identify middle level schools in Washington
state that had performed well on the WASL from 1998 to 2000 and to investigate
strategies they employed that may have been linked to their success.
An analysis was made of middle schools in Washington to identify a group of
schools with high or improving scores on the Washington Assessment of Student
Learning (WASL) when compared to other schools with similar student demographics
and school characteristics. Task force members reviewed the set of
schools identified, and a sample of the schools was selected for participation
in this study based on test scores and improvements in test scores, student
demographics, regional representation, school size, and district size.
