Mathematics

Assessments

Mathematics Assessment involves two tests: the Measurements of Student Progress for grades 3-8, and the High School Proficiency Exam, explained below. These tests replace the WASL, which was the state's assessment until 2009.

Assessing Mathematics in Grades 3-8:
Measurements of Student Progress (MSP)

In spring 2010, the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) replaces the WASL. The MSP measures the level of progress that Washington students have achieved based on the new Mathematics standards, which were adopted in July 2008.

The mathematics MSP exam will take place in a single day. It includes multiple choice, short answer and completion items. Sample items are being drafted at this time to demonstrate the item types. (The WASL took two days to administer and had extended response items instead of completion items.)

Assessing Mathematics in High School:
High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE)

In the 2009-2010 school year, the new High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) for grade 10 will assess the same Mathematics standards as assessed on the WASL.

In the 2010-2011 school year, the High School Proficiency Exam will be replaced by two end-of-course assessments, which will assess the new Mathematics standards (adopted July 2008). Each end-of-course (EOC) exam will take place in a single day. Students taking Algebra I/Mathematics 1 would take the first EOC, and students taking Geometry/Mathematics 2 would take the second EOC.
