Previous Teachers of the Year

How is the Teacher of the Year selected?
The Washington State Teacher of the Year is chosen by the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee from a slate of ten Regional Teachers of the Year - one from each of our Educational Service Districts and one from Washington's Tribal Schools. The Selection Committee's decision is based on a written application and interviews with each candidate. The State Selection Committee is guided by the selection rubric. Some of the regions may use this rubric for their selection as well. For more information on your region's selection process please contact your regional coordinator.

How do I nominate a teacher?
Anyone can submit a nomination using our online nomination form. Completed nominations are forwarded to the nominee and the appropriate regional coordinator. Nominated teachers are invited to complete the written application to compete for their regional award.

What do the State and Regional Teachers of the Year do?

  • Travel the state and their regions to share their expertise with community groups, businesses, government officials and future teachers.
  • Identify and advocate for educational issues of particular interest to them.
  • Receive small cash awards and additional prizes in recognition of their achievements.

What does the State Teacher of the Year do?

  • Attend all National Teacher of the Year program activities, including a national leadership conference, the national week of recognition in Washington, D.C.
  • Attend Space Camp!
