NEW SSB 6016 - Regarding Educator Training to Enhance Skills of Students with Dyslexia

Congratulations to Bremerton, Hoquiam, East Valley and Walla Walla!

All four districts are recipients of the 2007-2009 dyslexia grant, the Lorraine Wojahn Dyslexia Pilot Reading Program, in the amount of $120,000 each.
About Dyslexia
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is using the definition of dyslexia adopted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) in 2002:

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and /or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
Overview
In July of 2005, the Washington State Legislature provided funding for Dyslexia Pilot Programs. At that time, four schools in Washington State received grants to implement assessment and intervention programs to help students with dyslexia or characteristics of dyslexia. Further, the grant funds helped to provide professional development in effective intervention programs and strategies to build capacity and sustainability among teaching staff. In July, 2007, the Washington State Legislature provided funding to continue the efforts of the Lorraine Wojahn Dyslexia Pilot Reading Program. Again, four schools received grants in the amount of $120,000 each.
