CISL Addresses the Achievement Gap
for African American Students

Read the Plan to Close the Academic Achievement Gap for African American Students developed by the House Bill 2722 Advisory Committee with support from the Center for the Improvement of Student Learning.

See the presentation about the final report.

The Center for the Improvement of Student Learning (CISL) convened an advisory committee to develop a strategic plan to address the achievement gap for African American students as outlined in HB 2722.

The committee:

  Examined detailed data on achievement.

Examined current federal, state, school and community-based initiatives intended to improve student learning.

Identified best/promising practices specifically for African-American students.

Developed a comprehensive plan including strategies, programs and interventions, with funding necessary for implementation.

Developed educational performance measures and improvement benchmarks to monitor progress of the strategic plan.

Presented a draft report by September 15, 2008 and a final report by December 30, 2008, to the superintendent of public instruction, the state board of education, the governor, the P-20 council, and the education committees of the legislature.

CISL will provide an annual report beginning in 2010 on the implementation strategies and the improvement of education performance measures of African-American students.
