To renew the Professional Certificate, 150 clock hours of approved continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit must be completed since the issuance of the most recent certificate. All continuing education credit hours shall relate to EITHER:
- one or more of the three standards outlined in WAC 181-78A-540
- one or more of the five salary criteria specified in RCW 28A.415.023
Some clock hours must be related to the standards, and some must relate to salary criteria.

In lieu of the above clock hours, present a copy of a valid
certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching
Individuals who hold a professional administrator certificate who are completing annual professional growth plans (PGP’s) to renew the administrative certificate may waive 30 clock hours of the 150 clock hours needed for renewal of the professional teacher for each annual PGP completed as an administrator.
By completing the professional growth plan as defined in
WAC 181-79A-030 until September 1, 2014. Beginning September 1, 2014, only the professional growth plan developed in collaboration with the professional growth team as defined in WAC 181-79A-030 is required for renewal.
Individuals who are issued a professional teacher certificate under rules in
effect prior to September 1, 2014 shall be grandfathered and continue to have
the option of renewing with 150 clock hours (as described above), a valid NBPTS
certificate, or using professional growth plans. Details of the Professional Teacher Certificate PGP process are still being developed by the Professional Educator Standards Board. We will update this site when more information is available.
An expired professional certificate may be renewed by presenting evidence to the superintendent of public instruction of completing the continuing education credit hour requirement within the five years prior to the date of the renewal application.
