Professional Certificate for Teachers

Professional Certificate

Established in 2000, the professional certificate is the second-tier license for Washington teachers. The professional certificate was implemented to change the state certification system to an evidence-based system and is intended to build the capacity of teachers to provide quality learning opportunities to all students. The professional certification standards and criteria define the performance in which our P-12 students need to be engaged and the capacity needed by teachers in order to provide those learning opportunities.

In January 2010, the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) implemented the ProTeach Portfolio www.waproteach.org as the assessment to be passed to receive the professional certificate. Teachers who pass the ProTeach Portfolio and receive the professional certificate demonstrate they have met the current standards of practice required by the State of Washington. The ProTeach Portfolio provides a rewarding and rigorous professional development experience through the analysis and reflection on student-based evidence collected from a practice focused on an increase in learning for all students.
