Preparation Programs

Washington Teacher Preparation Program. Complete an approved Washington State teacher preparation program (available at 22 colleges/universities). Nearly two thirds of Washington teachers use this route. To view approved programs in Washington State.

Alternative Routes to Certification in Washington.  See Alternative Routes.

Other State's Approved Teacher Preparation Program. Complete a state-approved college/university teacher preparation program. More than one third of Washington teachers use this route.

Other State's Certificate. Hold full state certification/licensure from another state, plus 3 years of teaching experience. A small number of teachers use this route.

National Board Certificate. A certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards qualifies a teacher for a Professional Teacher Certificate.
