Adding an Endorsement

PLEASE NOTE: Endorsements CANNOT be added by testing only.
Educators may add endorsements to their Washington teacher certificate in ONE of FIVE ways:

Pathway 1 or 2

For Pathway 1 or 2, you must have at least 90 days of teaching experience in the compatible endorsement area you are currently endorsed. (Pathway 1) Must pass a WEST-E test in a desired endorsement that is closely compatible with an endorsement already held, or (Pathway 2) pass the WEST-E test in a desired endorsement that is somewhat compatible with an endorsement already held, plus successfully undergo evaluation of teaching skill in the desired endorsement area by a Washington college/university. Please see the  Pathway Chart for compatible endorsements available via Pathway 1 or Pathway 2.

The Professional Educator Standards Board maintains a list of Washington colleges offering the pedagogy assessment.

  • Pathway 2 - Follow instructions of your college/university. The college/university will submit verification of program completion to OSPI for you.

Pathway 3 - Program

Consult with your college/university for advice on requirements. Methods, field experience/internship, and subject matter credit hour requirements* are as follows:

  • Methods course(s). Certificated teachers are required to complete related methods coursework in the desired endorsement area.
  • Field experience/internship. For at least one endorsement area, certificated teachers are required to complete a supervised practicum which includes teaching in the specific endorsement area. For additional endorsement areas, the college will determine whether to require a field experience/internship, and the extent of that internship.
  • Complete appropriate content area testing. The WEST-E.
