For Those Who Hold A Continuing (Clock Hour) Certificate

The endorsed continuing certificate enables the holder to teach in endorsed subject areas and is valid for 5-year periods. It is subject to a continuing education (clock hour) requirement in order to maintain its validity every five years.

If you DO NOT KNOW what kind of Washington certificate you hold you can obtain this information online through E-Certification.

If you hold a VALID ENDORSED CONTINUING CERTIFICATE (issued after Sept 1, 1987) you have the following options:

If your CONTINUING has LAPSED you have the following option: Reinstate a Continuing Certificate, Transitional Certificate, Substitute Certificate

Maintain/Renew a Continuing Certificate

requirements

Continuing Education Credit Hours - Completion of 100 clock hours or equivalent college credits* during the five year validity period of the certificate. Academic credits must be 100-level or above and from an accredited college/university.
Or
Professional Growth Plan(s) – Completion of up to four annual professional growth plans (PGPs) developed since the certificate was issued and during each five-year period between subsequent lapse dates meets the requirement for renewal. Individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete the necessary continuing education credit hours to be the equivalent of one hundred clock hours* to meet renewal requirements. For educators holding multiple certificates in chapter 181-85 WAC or WAC 181-79A-251, a professional growth plan for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all continuing certificates held by an individual. Or
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards - Submit a copy of a valid teaching certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Reinstate a Continuing Certificate


Clock Hours - To reinstate a continuing certificate which has lapsed, 100 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit* must be completed within the five years prior to the date of application** for reinstatement. Course must be 100-level or above and from an accredited college/university.
Or
NBPTS - In lieu of the above clock hours, present a copy of a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Or
Professional Growth Plan(s) - In lieu of the above clock hours, individuals may choose to reinstate a continuing certificate via annual professional growth plans (PGPs). Completion of four annual PGPs during the previous five-year period meets the requirement for reinstatement. Individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete the necessary continuing education credit hours needed to be the equivalent of one hundred hours* to meet renewal requirements. The PGPs must document formalized learning opportunities and professional development activities that relate to the standards and "career level" benchmarks defined in WAC 181-79A-207 for teachers, WAC 181-78A-540(1) for administrators, or WAC 181-78A-540(2) for educational staff associates. For educators holding multiple certificates in chapter 181-85 WAC or WAC 181-79A-251, a professional growth plan for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all continuing certificates held by an individual.

**For example, if the certificate lapsed on June 30, 2017 and the applicant doesn't apply for reinstatement until August 1, 2017, clock hours taken during July of 2012 may not be used for reinstatement purposes. For clock hour provider information click here.

Transitional Certificate (certificate issued for two years)


  • Must have held a continuing certificate for the role which is expired.
  • Applications must be approved by a district intending to employ the applicant while working on the reinstatement requirements. Process is initiated by school district.
  • The transitional certificate cannot be renewed or reissued. Only one transitional certificate (per role) may be issued to an administrator, educator, or educational staff associate.
