Teacher Certification

For Those Who Hold A Continuing (Clock Hour) Certificate

The endorsed continuing certificate enables the holder to teach in endorsed subject areas and is valid for 5-year periods. It is subject to a continuing education (clock hour) requirement in order to maintain its validity every five years.

If you DO NOT KNOW what kind of Washington certificate you hold, send an email with your full name (name used at the time of certification), date of birth, certificate number (if known), and social security number (optional) to cert@k12.wa.us

If you hold a VALID ENDORSED CONTINUING CERTIFICATE (issued after Sept 1, 1987) you have the following options:

If your CONTINUING has LAPSED you have the following options: Reinstate a Continuing Certificate, Transitional Certificate, Substitute Certificate

Maintain/Renew a Continuing Certificate


To maintain the validity of the continuing certificate, 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit (15 quarter hours or 10 semester hours) must be completed every five years.
or
In lieu of the above clock hours, present a copy of a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Reinstate a Continuing Certificate


To reinstate a continuing certificate which has lapsed, 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit must be completed within the five years prior to the date of application* for reinstatement.
or
In lieu of the above clock hours, present a copy of a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

*For example, if the certificate lapsed on June 30, 2007 and the applicant doesn't apply for reinstatement until August 1, 2008, clock hours taken during July of 2003 may not be used for reinstatement purposes. For clock hour provider information click here.

Transitional Certificate


  • Only for holders of a lapsed continuing teacher certificate
  • Applications must be approved by a district which intends to employ the applicant on a conditional basis while working on reinstatement requirements
