Renew a Professional Teacher Certificate

Requirements

Fingerprint/Background check requirement - Any applicant who does not have hold a valid Washington educator certificate at time of application must complete the fingerprint and background check requirement. Supporting documentation is available on the Fingerprint/Background check website.

PLUS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Continuing Education Credit Hours:
    • First-Time Professional Renewal – One hundred clock hours or equivalent college credit*, directly related to the current performance-based standards as defined in WAC 181-78A-270(1), or up to four annual professional growth plans (PGPs) as defined in WAC 181-79A-030, completed since the professional certificate was issued.
    • Renewing a Valid Professional or Professional Renewal (Subsequent Renewals) – One hundred clock hours or equivalent college credit*, directly related to the current performance-based standards as defined in WAC 181-78A-270(1), or up to four annual professional growth plans (PGPs) as defined in WAC 181-79A-030, completed since the issue date of the most recent professional renewal certificate. Note: Application for subsequent renewals shall not be submitted earlier than twelve months prior to the expiration date of the current renewal.
    • Renewing an Expired Professional or Professional Renewal - Expired professional and professional renewal certificates may be renewed for an additional five-year period by presenting documentation to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Professional Certification office of completing one hundred clock hours or equivalent college credit* directly related to the current performance-based standards as defined in WAC 181-78A-270(1), or up to four annual professional growth plans (PGPs) as defined in WAC 181-79A-030 within the previous five years from the date of the five-year renewal application.

  • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards – A professional teacher certificate may be renewed based on a valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate. This renewal shall be valid for five years or until the expiration of the NBPTS certificate, whichever is greater. Such renewal is only available one time during the validity period of the National Board Certificate and cannot be the same National Board Certificate used to obtain the professional certificate.

Note - The professional growth plans (PGPs) must document formalized learning opportunities and professional development activities that relate to the standards and “career level” benchmarks defined in WAC 181-79A-270. Individuals may apply their focused evaluation professional growth activities of the evaluation system toward the professional growth plan for certificate renewal. For educators holding multiple certificates, a PGP for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all certificates held by an individual. Additionally, individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete necessary continuing education credits to be the equivalent of one hundred clock hours.

Clock Hour Equivalents: 1 quarter credit = 10 clock hours; 1 semester credit = 15 clock hours; 1 PGP until 6-30-18 = 30 clock hours; 1 PGP as of 7-1-18 = 25 clock hours.
