National Board Certification
and Your Washington State Teaching Certificate

Obtaining a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate comes with benefits and responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is maintaining a valid Washington State teaching certificate.

If you are considering National Board Certification, please review the following requirements for beginning the process.

The eligibility requirements for those who wish to pursue certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) are as follows:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Have completed three full years of teaching/counseling experience
  • Possess a valid state teaching/counseling license for that period of time, or, if teaching where a license is not required, have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state
