If you hold a VALID CONTINUING ESA CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

If your CONTINUING ESA CERTIFICATE has LAPSED you have the following option: Reinstate a Continuing ESA Certificate, Transitional ESA Certificate, Substitute ESA Certificate.

Maintain/Renew a Continuing Certificate

Requirements

Fingerprint/Background check requirement - Any applicant who does not have a valid Washington educator certificate at time of application must complete the fingerprint and background check requirement. Supporting documentation: Fingerprint/Background check website

Suicide Prevention Training (School Counselors, School Nurses, School Psychologists, School Social Workers ONLY) - Effective July 1, 2015, the candidate shall attest to the completion of a Professional Educator Standards Board approved suicide prevention training within the previous five years. The training program must be at least three hours in length. (RCW 28A.410.226)

PLUS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Continuing Education Credit Hours - Completion of 100 clock hours or equivalent college credits* during the five year validity period of the certificate. ESA certification and license hours
    or
  • Professional Growth Plan(s) – Completion of four annual professional growth plans (PGPs) developed since the certificate was issued and during each five-year period between subsequent lapse dates meets the requirement for renewal. Individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete the necessary continuing education credit hours to be the equivalent of one hundred clock hours to meet renewal requirements*. The PGPs must document formalized learning opportunities and professional development activities that relate to the standards and "career level" benchmarks defined in WAC 181-79A-207 for teachers, WAC 181-78A-540(1) for administrators, or WAC 181-78A-540(2) for educational staff associates. For educators holding multiple certificates in chapter 181-85 WAC or WAC 181-79A-251, a professional growth plan for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all continuing certificates held by an individual.     or
  • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards-School Counseling - Submit a copy of a valid school counseling certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (school counselor only).
    or
  • National Association of School Psychologist Certification - Submit a copy of a valid Nationally Certified School Psychologist certificate issued by the National Association of School Psychologists (school psychologist only).
    or
  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certification - Submit a copy of a valid Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) or Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) certificate issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (school speech-language pathologist or audiologist only).

*Clock Hour Equivalents: 1 quarter credit = 10 clock hours; 1 semester credit = 15 clock hours; 1 PGP until 6-30-18 = 30 clock hours; 1 PGP as of 7-1-18 = 25 clock hours.

To Reinstate a Continuing ESA Certificate

Requirements

NOTE: Include with Reinstatement application documentation for clock hours, credits, PGP's or national certificate (NBPTS or NCSP). You no longer need to send in your original certificate with your renewal.

Transitional Certificate


  • Must have held a continuing certificate for the role which is expired.
  • Applications must be approved by a district intending to employ the applicant while working on reinstatement requirements.
  • The transitional certificate cannot be renewed or reissued. Only one transitional certificate (per role) may be issued to an administrator, educator, or educational staff associate.
