Initial Career and Technical Educator (CTE) Certificate

This is the first tier certificate that an educator can apply for if they have completed either the university route or the business and industry route program and hold the required experience.

 

University (Full Teacher Program) Requirements

  • Must hold a bachelor's degree which includes a minimum of 45 quarter hours of study in the specific CTE specialty area
  • Completion of any state's approved CTE program in one of the four broad endorsement areas: Agriculture Education, Business and Marketing Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education or Technology Education - University Route Programs. Form 4075E
  • Must complete an approved content knowledge test (WEST-E or other approved test) in the specific subject area candidate is being recommended - Information on Testing
  • Must attest to completion of an issues of abuse course for more information see WAC 181-79A-030(9). This course MUST be entered into the ‘PD Hours’ section of your E-Certification account prior to applying
  • One year of paid occupational industry experience (2,000 hours) in the subject area other than teaching, with the exception of Family and Consumer Science Education. If all or part of the 2,000 hours is more than six years old, candidates must complete an additional 300 hours of recent (occurring in the last two years) occupational experience, which can be volunteer hours in the CTE subject area. Volunteer hours can only be used for the 300 hours of current industry experience. Verification of experience can be letters from past employers indicating how long you worked for them, pay stubs and W2's. If using W2s or pay stubs, please submit a summary of job duties that align with the W2s or pay stubs. Form 4075V
  • Must also apply for the Residency Teacher Certificate or apply to add the endorsement to your teacher certificate and take and pass the basic skills test and the content knowledge test and obtain the Residency Teacher Certificate or the endorsement before the Initial CTE Certificate can be issued

ISSUES OF ABUSE COURSE NOTE: The issues of abuse course or course work must include information related to identification of physical, emotional, sexual, and substance abuse; the impact on learning and behavior; the responsibilities of an educator to report abuse or to provide assistance to victimized children; and methods of teaching about abuse and its prevention.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE HOURS NOTE: May use up to 2,000 hours of teaching experience in the area for which certification is sought, in lieu of the 2,000 hours of non-teaching experience. If all or part of the 2,000 hours is more than six years old, candidates must complete an additional 300 hours of recent (occurring in the last two years) experience. Verification can be the 4075H Verification of Teaching Experience in Family and Consumer Science Education, letters from past or present employers, indicating how long you worked for them, pay stubs, and W2s. If using W2s or pay stubs, please submit a summary of job duties that align with the W2s or pay stubs.


Business and Industry (Specialty Program Areas) Requirements

(Specialty Areas within Agriculture, Business and Marketing, Health and Human Services, and Skills and Technology Sciences)

(This CTE route will not get you the CTE Agriculture V010000; Business and Marketing Ed V0780000; CTE Family and Consumer Science Ed V200002 or CTE Technology Ed V210100 areas)

  • Completion of a Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) approved program for the Business and Industry route or any other out of state approved Business and Industry route program.  Form 4075G
  • Must attest to completion of an issues of abuse course for more information see WAC 181-79A-030(9). This course MUST be entered into the ‘PD Hours’ section of your E-Certification account prior to applying
  • One year of paid occupational industry experience (2,000 hours) in the subject area other than teaching, with the exception of Family and Consumer Science Education. If all or part of the 2,000 hours is more than six years old, candidates must complete an additional 300 hours of recent (occurring in the last two years) occupational experience, which can be volunteer hours in the CTE subject area.   • Document three years (6,000 hours) of occupational experience in the specific CTE subcategory/specialty area for which certification is sought. Verification can be letters from past employers indicating how long you worked for them, pay stubs, W2’s and volunteer hours that can be verified by the agency/entity where you did your volunteer work. If using W2s or pay stubs, please submit a summary of job duties that align with the W2s or pay stubs. Form 4075H, Form 4075I

EXPERIENCE HOURS NOTE: A minimum of 2,000 hours must be paid industry occupational hours. The remaining 4,000 hours may be a combination of occupational hours and teaching hours. Teaching hours are calculated at the rate of 180 hours per class period per year and must be verified by a school district. One year (2,000 hours) must be within the past 6 years. If any of the 2,000 hours is more than 6 years old, 300 hours of the experience must be within the past 2 years. For the 300 hours, volunteer hours may be used in the past two years.

BIOMEDICAL AND BIOTECHNOLOGY HOURS NOTE: May use all 6,000 hours of teaching experience in biology.

STEM HOURS NOTE: May use all 6,000 hours of teaching experience in science, technology, engineering and/or math.

OUT OF STATE NOTE: Must submit a copy of out of state CTE (vocational) certificate and verification of three years teaching in grades 7-12 in the specific subject area OR verification of industry experience OR a combination of both equaling the required 6,000 hour of experience.
