For Those Who Hold A CTE Counselor Certificate

A career and technical education counselor certificate authorizes service as a CTE counselor in Washington school districts or skills centers.

If you hold a ONE-YEAR COUNSELOR CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

Renew the ONE-YEAR CTE Counselor Certificate (two times)
Apply for a THREE-YEAR CTE Counselor Certificate

If you hold a THREE-YEAR COUNSELOR CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

Renew the THREE-YEAR CTE Counselor Certificate (one time)
Apply for a FIVE-YEAR CTE Counselor Certificate

If you hold a FIVE-YEAR CTE COUNSELOR CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

Renew the FIVE-YEAR CTE Counselor Certificate (every 5 years)

Apply for a 1-Year CTE Counselor Certificate

Possession of a valid educational staff associate school counselor certificate or graduation from an institution of higher education in a counselor education program

Course in philosophy of CTE education

Two years of varied work experience in the last ten years other than teaching or counseling experience. (Experience is suggested in dealing with employment and personnel problems and with placement and evaluation of workers in business, industry, agriculture, eductaion and/or government service.)

To Apply for a 3-Year CTE Counselor Certificate

Must have held a one-year certificate within the past two years
Must have one year of CTE counseling experience
Must have 3 quarter credits (or the equivalent) of approved professional education since issuance of the previous certificate

To Renew a 3-Year CTE Counselor Certificate

Hold a valid 3-year CTE counselor certificate to renew
Not have a 3-year CTE counselor renewal certificate (may only renew this certificate once)

Three (3) quarter credits (or the equivalent) of approved professional education since issuance of the previous certificate

To Apply for a 5-Year CTE Counselor Certificate

Must have held a three-year CTE counselor certificate

Both of the following:

Must have two years of CTE counseling experience during the previous three-year certificate period
Must have six quarter credits (or the equivalent) of approved professional education since issuance of the previous certificate

Renew a 5-Year CTE Counselor Certificate

Candidate must hold a 5-year certificate to renew

Candidate must have:

A 5-year CTE counselor certificate
Two (2) years of CTE counseling experience during the previous three-year certificate period
Six (6) quarter credits (or the equivalent) of approved professional education since issuance of the previous certificate
