For Those Who Hold A Conditional CTE Certificate

A conditional career and technical education teacher certificate authorizes service as a career and technical education (vocational) teacher in Washington school districts or skills centers.

If you hold a CONDITIONAL CTE TEACHER CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

• Apply for Reissuance of the CONDITIONAL CTE Teacher Certificate (every year)
• Apply for a PROBATIONARY CTE Teacher Certificate (only if you qualify)
• Apply for an INITIAL CTE TEACHER Certificate (only if you qualify)

Candidate must hold a conditional CTE teaching certificate

Candidate does not meet the requirements for an initial CTE teacher certificate.

All of the following:

• The employing school district must request a probationary CTE teacher certificate
• The CTE instructor candidate shall have developed a professional growth plan in cooperation with the CTE administrator
• The plan must be approved by the local school district CTE program advisory committee to which the candidate is assigned
• The plan shall provide for orientation in the following prior to the commencement of the teaching assignment:
  - Issues related to legal liability
  - The responsibilities of professional CTE educators
  - The lines of authority in the employing school district and/or building
• Within the first 60 working days procedures must be established in the plan for the CTE instructor candidate to develop competencies in the following:
  - CTE methods
  - General and specific safety
• If the CTE instructor candidate does not have access to the required course work within the first 90 working days, the local school district CTE program advisory committee may authorize the completion of the course work at a later date. The required course work shall be completed prior to the second year of employment
• Procedures and timelines must be developed in the plan for the CTE instructor candidates to meet the requirements for the initial CTE certificate

Candidate meets the requirements for an initial CTE teacher certificate.

College/University Route:

• The candidate must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
• The candidate must have completed a state-approved teacher preparation program in one of the following five specialty areas: Agriculture Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Marketing Education, and Technology Education.
• The candidate must demonstrate competency in one or more of these five endorsement areas, and
• The candidate must document one year (2,000 hrs) of paid occupational experience in the specific CTE subject area for which certification is sought. If any of the 2,000 hrs is more than 6 yrs old, 300 hrs of the experience must be within the past 2 yrs.

Business and Industry Route:

• Have complete a Washington Professional Educator Standards Board-approved program for the business and industry route, and
• Document 3 yrs (6,000 hrs) of paid occupational experience in the specific CTE subcategory/specialty area for which certification is sought. One year (2,000 hrs) must be within the past 6 yrs. If any of the 2,000 hrs is more than 6 yrs old, 300 hrs of the experience must be within the past 2 yrs.
