For Those Who Hold an Initial Superintendent Certificate

An initial superintendent certificate verifies preparation in the superintendent role. If you hold or have held an INITIAL SUPERINTENDENT'S CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

Apply for an Additional Initial Superintendent Certificate
(valid for seven years)

Requirements

The candidate must have:

  • A master's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Completed a state-approved superintendent preparation program

Apply for a Continuing Superintendent Certificate
(valid for five year periods)

Requirements

  • Verification of 180 days of service as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, or deputy superintendent, 30 days of which must have been in the same school district
  • A course or coursework in issues related to abuse, which must include information related to identification of physical, emotional, sexual, and substance abuse; the impact on learning and behavior; the responsibilities of a teacher to report abuse or to provide assistance to victimized children; and methods of teaching about abuse and its prevention
  • Verification of 60 quarter hours (40 semester hrs) of graduate course work in education completed after the baccalaureate degree
    OR
    a doctorate in education
