A continuing administrative certificate enables the holder to serve in the administrator role in a public school district and is valid for 5-year periods. If you hold a VALID CONTINUING ADMINISTRATOR'S CERTIFICATE you have the following options:

Maintain/Renew a Continuing Certificate

Requirements

The administrator must have:

  • 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit must be completed during the five year validity period of the certificate.
    OR
  • In lieu of the above clock hours, individuals may choose to renew via annual professional growth plans (PGPs) developed since the certificate was issued. Completion of four annual PGPs during each five-year period between subsequent lapse dates meets the requirement for renewal. Individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete the necessary continuing education credit hours needed to be the equivalent of one hundred fifty hours to meet renewal requirements. The PGPs must document formalized learning opportunities and professional development activities that relate to the standards and "career level" benchmarks defined in WAC 181-78A-540. For educators holding multiple certificates in chapter 181-85 WAC or WAC 181-79A-251, a PGP for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all continuing certificates held by an individual. Each completed annual PGP shall receive the equivalent of thirty continuing education credit hours.

Reinstate a Continuing Certificate

Requirements

To reinstate a continuing certificate which has lapsed, 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit must be completed within the five years prior to the date of application* for reinstatement.

*For example, if the certificate lapsed on June 30, 2015 and the applicant doesn't apply for reinstatement until August 1, 2015, clock hours taken during July of 2010 may not be used for reinstatement purposes.

Transitional Certificate

Requirements

  • Only for holders of a lapsed continuing administrator certificate
  • Applications must be approved by a district which intends to employ the applicant on a conditional basis while working on reinstatement requirements
