Minimum Standards for State Surplus Computers for K-12 Schools
Computers 4 Kids will identify and refurbish working computers
and printers, in partnership
with the General Administration and Department of Corrections, that meet the following
minimum standards:
- Intel or AMD based Pentium IV 2.4
GhZ or
higher or Dual Core desktop (Celeron 2.8 GhZ or higher), 17 inch monitor (1024 X 768
resolution; or 15 inch or larger LCD flat panel), keyboard and mouse, or

-------These standards
are based upon a "rule of thumb" of providing computers to schools that are
3 years old or newer, so that these computers have at least one
year of usable life in the schools (for the purposes of the annual statewide
technology inventory, "standards-based computers" are defined as
computers that are 4 years old or newer). These standards were updated
in July, 2008,
and will be updated at least annually.
----------------- *Note: the hard drives of refurbished PCs are
erased, so these machines are usually provided to schools without an OS
installed. Under the Microsoft "Fresh Start Program", schools can obtain license
documentation and Windows installation CDs - at no cost - so they can re-install
the Windows 2000 operating system on these computers, if they wish (see
http://www.microsoft.com/education/FreshStart/FreshStart.asp for details).
