Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)
The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) was replaced in spring 2010 by the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) .
The WASL was Washington’s state test from 1997 to until summer 2009. In the late 1990s, the state began testing in reading, writing and math in grades 4, 7 and 10. Science testing began in grades 8 and 10 in spring 2003, and grade 5 was added the next year. In spring 2006, grades 3-8 and 10 were tested in reading and math under the federal No Child Left Behind requirement.
