Writing is an act of discovery, of communication, of joy. It connects us to work, to culture, to society, to existing knowledge, and to the meanings of our lives.
The Writing office at OSPI:
- Provides content and curricular leadership in the development of learning standards, classroom-based assessments, and instructional support materials
- Oversees the development and scoring of the writing portions of the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE)
- Provides technical support to Washington’s schools
The Writing Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) describe what students should know and be able to do.
The state assessment is designed to help schools and districts determine whether students have met the writing learning standards.
Developed and field tested by Washington teachers, instructional support modules include lesson plans and materials.
