Troops to Teachers helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools -- elementary, secondary, or vocational -- where their experience, knowledge and skills are most needed.
The primary objective of TTT is to help recruit quality teachers for schools that serve students from low-income families throughout America. The program:
- Helps relieve teacher shortages, especially in math, science, special education and other critical subject areas;
- Provides positive role models for the nation's public school students; and
- Assists military personnel with the transition to teaching as a second career.
The TTT program offers a $5,000 stipend toward teacher certification and a $5,000 bonus for teachers who fulfill the three-year commitment.
Since its creation in 1994, Washington state’s TTT program has placed over 300 teachers in the state’s public schools. Nationwide, over 16,000 troops have transitioned to teaching through the TTT program.
