Social Studies

Social Studies is an office within OSPI that provides assistance and guidance in the development and implementation of the Washington State Social Studies learning standards and assessments.

Learning Standards
The Social Studies Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) describe what students should know and be able to do in civics, economics, geography, history and Social Studies skills.

Assessment
The OSPI-Developed Social Studies Assessments are the state assessment models designed to help schools and districts determine whether students have met the Social Studies learning standards.

The WACs and RCWs that outline Social Studies education requirements in our state.

Social Studies in Washington State
Social Studies helps students become responsible citizens in a culturally diverse, democratic society within an interdependent world. Through the exploration of history, geography, economics, and civics, students learn about the people, places, issues, eras, and events that shape our world.

Social Studies Graduation Requirements
All public high school students are required to meet statewide graduation requirements in order to earn a diploma. Revised Social Studies graduation requirements for the class of 2016 are now available.

NEW! Civil Rights Education
Resources available to support RCW 28A.230.178 which encourages school districts to prepare and conduct a program at least once a year to commemorate the history of civil rights in our nation.

Social Studies Cadre of Trainers
The Washington State Social Studies Cadre of Trainers (WASSCoT) is comprised of 29 educators from across the Washington who volunteer to serve as a resource to educators in our state.

Programs and Awards
The Social Studies office facilitates various awards and programs which highlight educators and students in Washington State.
