Complaints against a School District
A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction with a policy, procedure, practice, philosophy, service level, or legal standard of an agency. While striving to be of assistance, it should be noted that the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction does not have legal authority to investigate or intervene in the regulatory responsibilities of a school district’s board of directors (RCW 28A.320.015). An example would be a school district discipline policy.
The general procedure for resolving issues or complaints with a school district are, in order, as follows:
- begin with the school principal; then
- the school district superintendent; then
- the local school board of directors.
Certain issues have further resolution available to them through the superior court (RCW 28A.645).
It is recommended that your complaint be conveyed in writing.
