State Board of Education Election of Board Members
Three positions on the State Board of Education are up for election this fall:
- Eastern Region Position 1 – four year term beginning the second Monday in January 2016.
- Western Region Position 3 – four year term beginning the second Monday in January 2016.
- Private School Representative – four year term beginning the second Monday in January 2016.
Eligibility: Candidates must be a resident in the region they wish to represent (see below). The person elected to the State Board of Education may not concurrently serve as a member of the State Board of Education and as an employee of any school, college, university or other educational institution, or any educational service district superintendent’s office, or in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, or as a member of the board of directors of either a public school district or a private school.
- Eastern Region (counties): Adams, Asotin, Benton, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Ferry, Franklin, Garfield, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, Lincoln, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, Walla Walla, Whitman, and Yakima.
- Western Region (counties): Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, and Whatcom.
- Private School Candidates: elected at-large by private school’s board of directors.
Public school members are elected by the public school district directors within the region they reside. The private school member is elected by private schools boards of directors.
Declaration of Candidacy forms for the positions may be filed with the Superintendent of Public Instruction not earlier than September 10, 2015, and not later than September 30, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. Please note that Declaration of Candidacy forms postmarked after September 30, 2015 will not be accepted. Mail Declaration of Candidacy forms to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200.
Ballots will be mailed to school directors on or before October 31, 2015. Voting will be by mail and ballots must be postmarked on or before November 30, 2015 in order to be counted. Ballots will be returned to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200.
Each member of a school district board of directors who resides in the geographical region (Western or Eastern) shall be eligible to vote for one candidate who resides within the board member’s same geographical region. The private school representative is voted on by members of private school board of directors.

Declaration and Affidavit for Candidacy | Election Notice
September 10 – 30, 2015
Candidate Filing Period.
Declaration of Candidacy must be postmarked on or before September 30, 2015.
October 2, 2015
Withdrawal of Candidacy deadline by 5:00pm.
Candidates wishing to withdraw their candidacy must do so in writing by 5:00pm on October 2, 2015. Written withdrawals must be submitted to OSPI – Administrative Resources.
October 23, 2015
OSPI to certify electors. (Certify electors and weighted vote for each region)
October 31, 2015 (on or before)
Ballots will be mailed to electors. Voting will be by mail and ballots must be postmarked on or before November 30, 2015.
November 30, 2015
Voted ballots must be postmarked on or before December 1, 2015. Voted ballots may be postal mailed to OSPI or hand-delivered by 5:00pm on November 30, 2015.
December 8, 2015
Ballots will be counted at OSPI
December 15, 2015
