Summit School is a K–8 option school. This learning school provides innovative classroom environments based on expeditionary learning benchmarks and design principles. Most of the curriculum at Summit is taught in learning expeditions. The elements of a learning expedition include standards, compelling topics, guiding questions, character, literacy, student products, service, adventure, and assessment. Expeditions integrate skills such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and research, and address issues such as diversity, equity, social justice, and multiculturalism.
At Summit, all students remain in a multi-age classroom for two years. Multi-age classrooms are comprised of 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th grade students. Teachers in each set of grade level classes, called “houses,” work together to ensure equitability between classrooms. All teachers work collaboratively to align learning expeditions with Washington State Learning Standards.
