District Improvement

Districts play a unique leadership role in school improvement. Additionally, effective districts focus on creating system-wide conditions to scale-up innovations and sustain improvements in all schools across the district. Based on current research synthesized in OSPI's Characteristics of Improved Districts: Themes from Research, districts making substantial progress in raising student achievement and supporting all schools in their improvement efforts share the following organizational characteristics:

  • Effective Leadership
  • Quality Teaching and Learning
  • Support for System-wide Improvement
  • Clear and Collaborative Relationships

Resources

To support all districts in their improvement efforts, SI offers a variety of Web-based resources, including Research & Studies, Improvement Processes & Tools and Needs Assessments & Diagnostic Tools. SI provides enhanced support and services to districts and schools based on their placement on the Washington Performance Management Framework. Districts/schools eligible to apply for services are notified through OSPI's electronic application system (iGrants).
