Summit District Improvement Initiative

Summit District Improvement InitiativeOSPI's School Improvement Division (SI) developed the Summit District Improvement Initiative in 2008. The Initiative emerged as a result of research and input from practitioners in SI programs regarding the importance of integrating improvement efforts of BOTH districts and their schools: absent district-wide systems to support continuous improvement in ALL schools across the district, improvements in ONE school are difficult to sustain over time.

The goals of the Summit Initiative are twofold:

  • Develop district knowledge, skills and capacity to lead and support consistent, sustained, and dramatic increases in student achievement in all district schools; and
  • Field test strategies to develop and expand the knowledge base, tools, and training needed to support a systems approach that can, with sufficient funding, be scaled statewide.

Participating Districts

  • Cohort I: The following districts began a three-year commitment to the Initiative in the 2008–2009 school year: Mount Adams SD, Mount Vernon SD, Othello SD, Renton SD, and Wapato SD
  • Cohort II: Three additional districts began in the 2009–2010 school year: Clover Park SD, Sunnyside SD, and Tukwila SD

Resources

SI provides Summit Districts with significant resources and technical assistance to leverage change in all schools and turnaround those schools targeted for improvement, corrective action, or restructuring. In addition to OSPI staff, four external partners provide technical assistance to Summit Districts: The BERC Group, Center for Educational Effectiveness, Teachscape, and WestEd. Summit District teams also engage in technical assistance and supportive services provided through SI's Washington Improvement and Implementation Network (WIIN). Additionally, teachers in Summit Districts receive support to earn their National Board Certification.
