GATE Equity Webinar is Expanding

GATE Equity Webinar is going to offer even more great content this year with two webinars every second Wednesday of the month! If you want to improve your system of supports, data use, instruction, and student achievement, this is the webinar for you.

GATE Equity Webinar helps growth minded educators and education advocates to learn from Washington districts who are closing opportunity gaps. Using OSPI data and experience from the field, GATE Equity webinar reveals the systems that drive success, an equity focus, and the key strategies that are getting students to graduation.

GATE Equity Webinar links research and best practice featuring education experts and Washington practitioners with findings on equity in graduation, such as attendance, 9th graders on-track, dual credit, discipline, community partnerships, and building strong teams. The goal of GATE Equity Webinar isn't merely to inform, but to give you insights to apply at schools, in your offices, and throughout your life.

In the morning, we will continue to bring you stories from districts who are doing great work. Starting in September, we're also adding a new specialized bonus webinar in the afternoons focusing in on specific student groups. These webinars will offer supports for students with disabilities, English Learners, ALE students and more while taking a deeper look at our topic for the month.

In August, we bring you authors of Why We Drop Out, Deborah Feldman and Anthony Smith to share their research on Washington students who have disengaged from our school system. A vast majority of students who drop out were engaged in school at some point. Results show that many students who considered themselves "good readers" in early grades became disinterested in reading in later grades as reading became "boring". It is so important to consider youth perspectives when designing interventions and supports for students at risk of dropping out of school. Join us to learn more!

+ December 13, 2017 - Predicting Graduation with Early Warning Indicators

Join us to talk early warning systems with researchers from the Everyone Graduates Center.

Robert Balfanz, PhD, is a research professor at the Center for the Social Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, where he is co-director of the Talent Development Secondary reform model and director of the Everyone Graduates Center. Check out their Annual Report.

He has published widely on secondary school reform, high school dropouts, early warning systems, chronic absenteeism, school climate, and instructional interventions in high-poverty schools. He focuses on translating research findings into effective school interventions.

Based on work by the Everyone Graduates Center, learn about the components of early warning systems and how you can use them.

How can parents and advocates ask schools to be more proactive with early warning systems?
We would suggest speaking with the leadership team at their schools and district officials (possibly at School Board Meetings) to inquire about how often and when are off-track students and potentially off-track students discussed in a structured environment where interventions are assigned and follow-up is conducted? Also, maybe have them ask the school what their rate of indicators is? How many students have ABCs?

Sharing the need/desire to monitor and/or implement Early Warning Systems in schools would also be a way to show the schools and districts that parents, advocates and community stakeholders are interested in schools being pro-active, instead of re-active when it comes to identifying students that are off-track or have the potential to become off-track.

A vision that all students are ready for career, college and life can be measured through success in high rigor courses such as Advanced Placement (AP). Everett School District has made an intentional effort to prepare all students for college, career and life. Becky Ballbach, Director of Student Support Services for Everett school district, will share her district's effort to expand AP enrollment, particularly to historically underserved students. This webinar will focus on:

The Governor's Office of the Education Ombuds (OEO) was created by the legislature in 2006 to address the opportunity gap, engage families, and provide informal and impartial conflict resolution to improve relationships between schools and families. Learn how OEO engages with families, partners with schools and community organizations, and makes policy recommendations to improve the K-12 system.

OEO director Carrie Basas will also share how the OEO is using data to drive its practices, particularly in the areas of attendance and graduation, and provide a snapshot of the patterns that the OEO has found statewide.

Finally, she will engage with attendees to brainstorm ways that OEO can be more helpful in supporting schools, through sharing OEO data, partnering for data-driven collaboration, acting as a sounding board in difficult situations, or providing overall recommendations for improving school-family communication.

Student perception data is valuable, and it's collection and use is a key practice of districts that are successfully increasing graduation rates. One of Washington State's key data source is the Healthy Youth Survey.

In this webinar we will highlight an analysis of the HYS and the items on the survey that are correlated with graduation rates. In addition, we will share some specific building level examples of using student perception data to improve student outcomes.
