Equity and Civil Rights

For Families

Equity and Civil Rights Office works to ensure that each student has equal access to public education without discrimination. We are dedicated to providing students and families with information about their civil rights and raising awareness of barriers to equal access and civil rights responsibilities within public schools.

For information about civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination in public schools and the responsibilities of public schools, start here:

Dispute Resolution Options
We encourage families, school districts, and charter schools to work together to resolve disagreements and concerns about discrimination and harassment in schools.

Contact Your Compliance Coordinator
Often, the most efficient way to address concerns about discrimination is by contacting the Compliance Coordinator at your school district or charter school.

File a Complaint
There are complaint options available under state and federal civil rights laws that can address concerns about unlawful discrimination in Washington public schools. Information about filing a complaint.

Need Assistance?
The staff at your student's school and district office are always available to assist you in ensuring that your student has equal access to all school programs and services. You can start by contacting your child's principal or Compliance Coordinator.

If you have questions about rights and responsibilities under civil rights laws, or have concerns about discrimination in your child's school, the Equity and Civil Rights Office can assist you by providing information about nondiscrimination laws and complaint options. We do not provide legal advice or advocate on behalf of any one party.
