Single Sex Classes
Under Washington law, school districts may not provide any course, program, or activity separately based on sex.
Separation of students based on sex is only permitted for:
- Physical education classes, if it can be shown that it is the best method for providing both sexes with an equal opportunity to participate, and the classes or activities are substantially equal;
- Classes that deal with human sexuality; and
- Choir, when based on vocal range or quality.
Important Note about Federal Law - Title IX:
Even if a single sex class or activity is permissible under federal law, school districts in Washington must abide by Washington State law which prohibits single-sex classes (see above).
