Evergreen Heights Elementary - Kindergarten to Grade 5
We are responsible for the learning that all our students master. We find our greatest resources within the school. We adapt to the changing needs of each child, and we depend on each other for the support that makes it possible to reach for the best and most we are able to give...Principal Anne Gayman

Student Support

Gains in academic achievement do not occur simply because classroom time is filled with high-quality instruction, although that most critical element plays an enormous role. Students must also feel the impact of well-designed academic and behavior programming that enriches learning, and builds positive habits of mind and ways of being in the world. At Evergreen Heights, these programs are richly varied and well executed.

Learning Activities Augment Classroom-based Instruction

  • Daily walk-to-math and walk-to-reading (intervention and enrichment activities in small, grade-level groups) with highly-qualified instructional staff
  • Think Time program that works to modify behavior. Take a look at a Think Time form.
  • Self-Manager award and monthly recognition awards for positive behavior
  • Staff mentor individual students with unique needs
  • Struggling students take advantage of a weekly meeting with the guidance team
  • Student greeter program
  • Homework club that meets at lunch time, and before and after school
  • Web-based — IXL, EDM— programs for practice at home
  • Accelerated Reader program that builds incentives into reading activities

Build Community for a Support-rich, Risk-free Learning Environment

Math Night

Evergreen Heights invites the community to a night of math games, estimation challenges, make- and take-stations — everyone leaves with a prize.

Culture Fair

Families come to the school to share their cultural experience. There are classroom displays, live performances, people garbed in traditional attire and ethnic food to enjoy. Here is one of the many colorful and descriptive Culture Fair displays.

Talent Show

Intermediate students get the opportunity to perform for family and friends at the Auburn Avenue Theater. The whole community is welcome.

PTA-sponsored events

Every month, this active PTA organizes family-oriented events, a Fall Festival, PJs & Popcorn, Bingo for Books, Scholastic Book Fair, Santa Shop, a trip to the Pacific Science Center and Reptile Man. These are just a few of the fun-packed events kids and families can enjoy.

Motivational assemblies

Once a month, Evergreen Heights holds a Character Trait of the Month assembly at which students are recognized for outstanding behavior that demonstrates integrity, individual responsibility, compassion, perseverance — 12 positive traits in all. Principal and staff deliver motivational presentations and a video comes out at the end of the school year that features the award-winning students.

National Anthem Choir

Evergreen Heights students perform the national anthem at local college and professional sporting events.

Auburn School District events

Sponsored by the district, Evergreen Heights holds school spirit days every month and participates in the district food drive — Evergreen Heights was the 2012 champion. As well, students get to participate in a range of field trips.

Back-to-school and spring BBQ events

These meet-and-greet get togethers are popular with families who get to enjoy a meal with students and staff at the school.

Field Day

Field Day is an end-of-the-year celebration that engages parent volunteers as event station managers.

ELL home visits

The ELL teacher at Evergreen Heights and a translator visit students’ homes to provide one-to-one support.

We Can Make the Connection
In the Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools, school environment plays an enormous role in student achievement — personal and academic — as does the shared effort of the adult community, in all its aspects. The open door and the generosity of the people who create a school environment in which engagement can flourish, such as Evergreen Heights, provide this element as essential to the alchemy that leads to personal-best student performance at the school desk, in the halls, in the playground and at home.

quoteThe school has a safe, civil, healthy and intellectually stimulating learning environment. Students feel respected and connected with the staff and are engaged in learning. Instruction is personalized and small learning environments increase student contact with teachers.

There is a sense that all have a responsibility to educate students, not just the teachers and staff in schools. Families, as well as businesses, social service agencies, and community colleges/universities all play a vital role in this effort. quote
