Bremerton First "Lighthouse District" In Washington State

Background:
The Bremerton School District has developed one of the most highly successful early learning programs in Washington state. Their model is remarkable for many reasons, most notably the foundational partnerships with early childhood care providers and community organizations. Recently their work was recognized by the American School Board Journal (ASBJ) receiving the Magna Award for innovative practices. The Washington State Legislature named Bremerton School District as the first “Lighthouse District”, granting them authority to partner with schools across the State to support and mentor them as they begin implementing full-day kindergarten programs.

As a Lighthouse District, Bremerton provides schools on-site support, shares the processes they used in selecting curricula, offers professional development, and shares logistics that have helped them achieve success.
