Common Core State Standards

Families

The current Washington state standards that set the bar for K-12 education include robust learning goals that place your child on a path to college, skills training or the workplace. With the adoption of Common Core State Standards, we gain several more advantages, such as:

  • Students graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete here in America and internationally.
  • All students, regardless of where they live, will have access to the same rigorous standards.
  • Learning expectations are clear to students, parents, teachers and the community.
  • Instructional support materials aligned to the CCSS, such as text books and digital media, will be developed over time.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and mathematics benefit students, their parents, and their teachers. Students will be better prepared for college and careers; parents will understand better how to support their students; and teachers will be able to focus on depth of understanding.

Our society is mobile. Common Core State Standards assure parents that their children will have access to the same high-quality education, no matter their zip code. They also help minimize the disruption a student can experience after relocating—repeating subject matter already mastered, or trying to learn what wasn’t taught in a different state.

Families can be confident that the decision to adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) was a decision made in the best interests of every public school student in Washington state.

The National Parent Teacher Association has created guides to the standards for each grade level. You can find the guides and more resources at on our Common Core Resources page.
