Computer Science Grants

On October 31, 2017, OSPI announced that $1 million in grants were awarded to improve access to computer science and related educational programs in Washington state.

The 2017 Legislative Session Budget Details.

The 2017 Washington State Legislature allocated $1,000,000 of the general fund in Fiscal Year 2018 and $1,000,000 in Fiscal Year 2019 for computer science education (ESSB 5883, Sec. 501, 35). These funds are designated for implementation of teacher training and credentialing in computer science; provide for technology upgrades needed to learn computer science; and for computer science frontiers grants to introduce students to and engage them in computer science.

Any school district, building, or Educational Service District may apply for any grade(s) K–12. Funds for the computer science education competitive grant may be expended only to the extent that they are equally matched by private sources for the program, including gifts, grants, endowments, and in-kind services which can be quantified. All grant activities must align to Washington State K-12 Computer Science Standards and the designations listed above. We anticipate that most grant applicants will request between $5,000 and $50,000.

Computer Science Grants 2015-17
The Washington State Legislature made $2 million in state funding available for computer science and education grants through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) in 2015. These competitive grants allowed districts, schools, and nonprofits to train teachers; provide and upgrade technology; and expand access to girls, underrepresented students, and underserved communities. State grant funds had to be matched equally by private sources, which effectively expanded the total grant amount to $4 million.

Previous Grant information can be found on the Grant Activities page.
