Five Elementary Schools Receive $25,000 Grants
OLYMPIA — September 30, 2009 - Students in five Washington public elementary schools will decide how to spend $25,000, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) announced today.
The Apple Award Construction Achievement Grant winners will use their money for capital construction projects. The students themselves will determine how to spend the money, which must be used on school grounds or on other public property in the community, city or county in which the district is located.
The schools were identified by OSPI based on a number of criteria, including on academic improvement on state assessments from 2007-08 to 2008-09, school size and geographic location.
The Apple Award Construction Achievement Grants were made possible through funding provided by the Legislature during the 2009 session. The award began in 2004 and has been funded every year except 2007-08.
Students from the awarded schools will select the project idea. When the idea is approved by the district and OSPI, the district will then develop a project plan for implementation which is submitted for approval. When the project plan is approved, the project work will begin.
Past projects include new playground equipment, a traverse wall, a greenhouse kit and a jungle gym.
