Maintain/Renew a Continuing Certificate

Renewal Process

To maintain the validity of the continuing certificate, 150 approved clock hours of continuing education study and/or equivalent academic credit (15 quarter hours or 10 semester hours) must be completed every five years.
or
In lieu of the above clock hours, present a copy of a valid certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
or
In lieu of the above clock hours, individuals may choose to renew a continuing certificate via annual professional growth plans (PGPs) developed since the certificate was issued. Completion of four annual PGPs during each five-year period between subsequent lapse dates meets the requirement for renewal. Individuals completing fewer than four annual PGPs must complete the necessary continuing education credit hours needed to be the equivalent of one hundred fifty hours to meet renewal requirements. The PGPs must document formalized learning opportunities and professional development activities that relate to the standards and "career level" benchmarks defined in WAC 181-79A-207 for teachers, WAC 181-78A-540(1) for administrators, or WAC 181-78A-540(2) for educational staff associates. For educators holding multiple certificates in chapter 181-85 WAC or WAC 181-79A-251, a professional growth plan for teacher, administrator, or educational staff associate shall meet the requirement for all continuing certificates held by an individual. Each completed annual PGP shall receive the equivalent of thirty continuing education credit hours.
