Obtaining a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate comes with benefits and responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is maintaining a valid Washington
state teaching certificate.
Achieving National Board Certification entitles you to maintain your WA state
teaching certificate for 10 years. However, it is necessary to complete the
appropriate WA state OSPI certification paperwork in order to maintain your
teaching certificate.

The eligibility requirements for those who wish to pursue certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) are as follows:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree
- Have completed three full years of teaching/counseling experience
- Possess a valid state teaching/counseling license for that period of time, or, if teaching where a license is not required, have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state
