As required in the 2011-13 Biennial Operating Budget (2ESHB 1087, (Section 501(1)(a)(v)), the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) transmitted a statewide standard definition for an unexcused absence to the Legislature. The budget law further requires that beginning no later than January 1, 2012 districts shall report absence data by school using this definition.

The 2010 Legislature passed Substitute Senate Bill 6363 giving school crossing guards the authority to report to the local law enforcement agency when the operator of an approaching vehicle commits an infraction by failing to stop for a pedestrian or bicyclist within a crosswalk that is marked with school or playground speed zone signs.
