Additional Terms for Glossary
ELL – An English Language Learner is a person learning English whose primary language is a language other than English.
GIST – Generalizing Interaction between Schemata and Text.
Guided Practice – Refers to a teacher-led activity that the class completes together. Guided practice occurs prior to any independent practice. It should be conducted in small steps with intense supervision that should prevent the development of consistent error patterns and inappropriate practices.
Modeling – The teacher demonstrates a process for a group of students prior to guided practice. The teacher may also articulate his/her reasoning or thinking ("think aloud") while demonstrating in order to show students how they might think or reason through the process.
