Alternative Education

Alternative Learning Experiences (ALE) are primarily distinguished by off-campus instruction. The intent of this type of program is to give schools flexibility to serve a diverse student population. The specific requirements and expectations of these away-from-school learning activities are detailed in a written student learning plan (WSLP) developed and supervised by a public school teacher.

OSPI provides general support, consultation and technical assistance to educators and schools regarding alternative education, with a primary focus on implementing Alternative Learning Experiences under WAC 392-121-182.

OSPI and the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives (WALA) have an active partnership to support learning alternatives in Washington state. Visit WALA for information about general Alternative Education programs.
